The Tallgrass Experience - Part 1

It is done. Two weeks ago, on October 16th we celebrated the World Premiere of I Am Gangster as part of the 13th Tallgrass Film Festival in Wichita, KS. It was pretty intense, for me personally, to show the film to a general audience for the first time.

I became very good at keeping my somewhat anxious anticipation at bay during the weeks leading up to the festival. But a few days before I felt it creeping in, in a positive way mostly, and although I do enjoy discussing the film and why it exists, I don’t seek out the spotlight or any related attention. It is just not my natural habitat.

I departed LA on Thursday morning, arrived in Wichita later afternoon and proceeded to attend a social mixer, where I met some locals and programmers, who showed me around town that night. It seems like an up and coming place that Wichita, a little oasis of sorts in the Koch-driven Kansas.

Then, Friday really was promising to be the day of days: a three-hour press block followed by a filmmaker roundtable, tech check, the screening, a Q&A and then a party. It was everything it was cracked up to be. I was excited to talk about Gangster, to hear what people’s responses were, but I’m not gonna lie, ahead of my first ever press interview (and the looming screening) I shat my pants.

Once I sat at the table though, the fun took over and I had great conversations with the guys from Midwest Digest, the ladies from Project Nerd and John Wildman who interviewed me for Wichita Public Radio KMUW’s Daily Buzz. I will share those interviews with you as they become available.

Next time on handmade: The Screening. There's drama. There's jealousy. There's backstabbing!
