The Process - Partners

An account of the recent developments of the ‘Citizen’ project. – Part 2

Earlier this year I started to shop around a draft of the Citizen screenplay. I'm lucky to know so many amazing, talented people who know even more talented people so my priority has been to directly assemble the core creative team: the Cinematographer, the Editor, Production Designer and Costume Designer, the Casting Director – the departments in charge of turning the script into the best film it can be. And I was already able to meet with some very promising cats. Considering shooting is currently scheduled for Spring 2013 we’ll be making crew decisions by January 2013.

Another Gang(ster) Movie

So, who needs another movie about gangs; a movie aiming at a particular blunt portrayal of reality on top of that; a movie seemingly about Latino street gangs, which according to some folks is a not very helpful part of the image of Mexican-Americans. I write “seemingly” because to me it is less about “Latino street gangs” than it is about history and society, it is about the way we conducted ourselves primarily over the last 100 years.

Legal Delicacies

A significant recent development affects the core of the Citizen story. I have written before that part of it was inspired by Juan Abel Escalante, a deputy with the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department who was shot down by gang members in front of his house, leaving behind his wife and three kids. Moved by Escalante’s story I dove right in and, using public records, created a fictional character based on the facts surrounding his life.

The Process - Prospects

An account of the recent developments of the ‘Citizen’ project.

So, after being holed-up in my studio for the last 2 ½ years – with the exception of my work at a youth jail in Norwalk or my trips to Moreno Valley to get to know and spend time with youth offenders of all stripes and colors, two upbeat and disarmingly charming youngsters in particular – I was able to create a solid foundation, I find it a promising foundation, for Citizen. I’ve been searching and collecting more titles, by the way. I want to publish some options soon.

Photo Series: American West

I decided to use this blog - not always related to current projects - as a platform for some of my other creative practices, like photography. With my 1966 Minolta SR-T 101 35mm, manual focus SLR camera, which I take out only on the most special of occasions, I roam my block, my neighborhood, the city, the state, the country and once in a while the world. This is what I bring back - definitely handmade, in this case very well processed and only artistically sustainable.
